“The Excellence of Fur” presentations organised by the HAF in Thessaloniki and Athens exceeded participants’ expectations.
The two presentations on fur “The Excellence of Fur”, organised by the Hellenic Association of Furriers in the framework of the Young Greek Designers Contest, held every year with the sponsorship of the NAFA auction house, were particularly successful and exceeded the participants’ expectations. The presentations, with the participation of more than 50 young designers attending fashion and design schools in Greece and their professors, were held on Thursday, 23 October 2014, in the MEDITERRANEAN PALACE hotel in Thessaloniki and on Friday, 24 October 2014, in the Golden Age hotel in Athens.
The presentations aimed to inform young designers of the dynamic, purely export-oriented and extroverted sector of fur and allow them to become acquainted with the unique material of fur, the various possibilities and applications it allows, to enable them to participate more effectively in the contest, which aims to foster new talent in the field of fur product design in Greece.
The HAF’s representative, Ms Zourla, talked about the particularities of the Greek fur industry and the activities of the Hellenic Association of Furriers, focusing on the various events concerning designers organised during the International Fur Fair “FUR EXCELLENCE IN ATHENS”, and provided participants with details about the contest.
NAFA’s representative and Vice-president of Buyer Relations, Mr Poulios, placed particular emphasis on the significant role played by Greek furrier companies in the field internationally. Introducing NAFA’s promotion activities and the special fashion events it organises in markets of interest internationally, he provided a clear overview of the fur industry’s relationship with fashion and the prospects offered to young designers by the sector.
Once again HAF’s associate, Mr Vasilis Kardasis, professor of the Royal College of Art, London and art director of NAFA Studio, Toronto, stole the limelight, presenting the material and potential of fur in his own special way. Using samples of various fur stitching techniques, created at his guidance by the NAFA Studio, he encouraged attendees to a hands-on study of these materials and use their passion and imagination for creating their own designs.
Attendees, teachers and new designers studying in design schools in Greece, could not curb their enthusiasm, stating “It was amazing! We’d like to thank you for the opportunity to learn so many things about fur, in such a direct manner”. Full of new experiences they start their designs for the contest in order to rank in the top three positions, which will ensure their participation in the one-week seminar in Toronto, all inclusive, a prize by the great sponsor of the exhibition, the NAFA Auction House.
The Young Greek Designers Contest, expiring on 8 December 2014, is held for the 4th consecutive year in the framework of the International Fur Fair “FUR EXCELLENCE IN ATHENS”, which this year will be held on 24 to 27 March 2015.
Announcement of Competition for Greek Young Designers in the framework of the 5th International Fur Fair “FUR EXCELLENCE IN ATHENS”
For the fourth consecutive year, the “Hellenic Association of Furriers (HAF)” in cooperation with the Fur Action House of NAFA announces the “ Greek Young Designers Competition” for the awarding of new talents in the fur products design. It is open to young people attending Greek universities and design, pattern and fashion schools.
Those interested can send their proposed designs/creations by 8 December 2014 to the Hellenic Association of Furriers by email at email@example.com.
This year, proposed designs will draw their inspiration from Greek mythology or anything related to Ancient Greece, as detailed in the attached summary of the topic by our associate, professor of the Royal College of Art, London and art director of NAFA Studio, Mr Kardasis Vasilis, and fur must be used as their basic material. For the familiarisation of participants with the types of fur, two presentations “The Excellence of Fur” will be held in Thessaloniki and Athens, on 23 and 24 October respectively.
An experts’ committee will select the ten (10) best among them, which will then be made free by companies participating in the exhibition as exhibitors, for the award of the three first winners of the Competition. To allow the fabrication of the 10 originally selected designs, participants must directly submit the corresponding pattern, if selected.
The prize for the first three is a one-week seminar – workshop in Toronto, Canada, at the Studio Design one of the most famous Fur Auction Houses in the world, the NAFA (North American Fur Auction) (http://www.nafa.ca/). Transport and accommodation expenses will be covered by the International Auction House NAFA.
The contest is held in the framework of the 5th International Fur Fair “FUR EXCELLENCE IN ATHENS”, which is held from 24 to 27 March 2015, a fair aiming at the promotion of the Greek fur industry internationally, as FUR EXCELLENCE IN ATHENS – International Fur Fair is an event of strategic importance for the industry and fashion of Fur, a meeting point of buyers and producers from around the world. The three winners of the competition will be awarded during the fair.
Below is a summary of the topics for the Greek Young Designers Competition, held in the framework of the 5th International Fur Fair “FUR EXCELLENCE IN ATHENS” by Mr Vasilis Kardasis, associate of the HAF and professor of the Royal College of Art-London.

The official opening of the anniversary exhibition period of the 5th International Fur Fair “FUR EXCELLENCE IN ATHENS” was launched by the Hellenic Association of Furriers, presenting the creative project of the fair. A Fair promoting Greece, Kastoria and Siatista.
In continuation of the history that started with last year’s creative project, HAF associate Mr Vasilis Kardasis, creator – designer, professor of the Royal College of Art, London, inspired by the creations of Ancient Greeks , and specifically the columns of ancient temples in Delphi and the Parthenon, works with the materials that we use with love and respect in fur. He transforms last year’s inspiration into an earthly entity that lands in an industrial space decided to power us with a new orientation in our strategy and an incentive for further research and creation.
This creation was, morally and materially, supported by the Hellenic Association of Furriers and Mr Vlachakis’ company, Expopel S.A. for second consecutive year. The photo shooting was made in Athens, with all the associates of the MM Creative team and… the Earthly Goddess, a Symbol of Life, was officially presented in hotel Limneon, on 29 September.
The Board of Directors of HAF states its full satisfaction for this year’s, full of symbolism, creative project which underlines the skills of Greek fur producers to materialise, with their unique craftsmanship, the inspirations of their creators, always using top quality furskins.
A result embodying the decisiveness and dynamics of the Exhibitors, providing a new dimension to the FUR EXCELLENCE IN ATHENS fair, the meeting point of international fur industry in Greece, where real business is made!
A Cycladic Female Figurine was chosen by the Administration Board of Hellenic Association of Furriers to be given as a memoir gift to all exhibitors who participated at this year’s Fur Excellence in Athens, 2014.
The power of the city where this International Fur Fair takes place, Athens, the birth place of Western Civilization, inspired not only this year’s FEA creative, which, reincarnated a Greek Goddess dressed in a modern chiton made of fur, but the commemorative gift as well. In the pursuit to honor Woman through the various civilizations that flourished in Greece, a Cycladic Female Figurine of the early Cycladic period was chosen by HAF as a commemorative gift to those who honored FEA 2014 with their participation.
The Cycladic figurines of this form represent female figures standing naked, with the arms folded below their chest. Their abstract refined figure probably represents a great “Mother Goddess”, symbol of fertility and rejuvenation. They belong to the Early Cycladic II period 2800-2300 B.C.
Cycladic culture flourished on the islands of the central Aegean during the Early Bronze Age (3rd millennium BC). The Museum of Cycladic Art collection is one of the most comprehensive collections of Cycladic antiquities worldwide, comprising an astonishing variety of marble figurines and vessels, bronze tools and weapons, as well as pottery from all phases of the Early Cycladic period
A new beginning marked the workshop “Discovering Fur Excellence” during Fur Excellence in Athens 2014. Hellenic Association of Furriers felt the need to inform young people about the art of fur, decided the implementation of this innovative idea.
United and generous sponsors and supporters of the workshop under the inspiring presence of Professor of Royal College of Art-London and Advisory Board member of HAF Mr. Kardasi Vassili, helped to operate the laboratory – experiential seminar for fur addressed to Greek students of design – fashion schools.
The company TSOP-Fur Machines was the main sponsor which provided the basic equipment of a laboratory. Also sponsors were the companies 2ice/Tzinterpel, Langiotti and Luxor, which had offered not only the necessary staple machines of leather-fur-fabric but also basic complementary equipment, materials, patterns, leathers, coats.
Furthermore, supporters of the action, offering free skins, coats, dolls etc. were the companies: Bourtsos, CPL, DTS, Inochi by Expopel, Finezza, Global Trade Pellicce, KN furs, Obsession furs, demonstrating that when the motivation and inspiration given, Greek fur entrepreneurs – HAF members contribute to the success of joint efforts and goals.
