Sponsors of Discovering Fur Excellence WORKSHOPS- FEA 2015

This year the sponsorship of this creative field was undertaken, apart from the TSOP furriery machinery company that has enthusiastically supported this venturesince the first year, by the HellenicFur Federation and Fur Europe, declaring in action their support for the activities of the Hellenic Association of Furriers.

The companies that supported this action offering free machinery, tools and materials, mannequins, leather and other ready-made garments for presentation were the companies – members of HAF: CPL, DTS, EXPOPEL, GLOW, KN Furs, LANGIOTTI and LUXOR.

“The Excellence of Fur” presentations organised by the HAF in Thessaloniki and Athens exceeded participants’ expectations.

The two presentations on fur “The Excellence of Fur”, organised by the Hellenic Association of Furriers in the framework of the Young Greek Designers Contest, held every year with the sponsorship of the NAFA auction house, were particularly successful and exceeded the participants’ expectations.  The presentations, with the participation of more than 50 young designers attending fashion and design schools in Greece and their professors, were held on Thursday, 23 October 2014, in the MEDITERRANEAN PALACE hotel in Thessaloniki and on Friday, 24 October 2014, in the Golden Age hotel in Athens.

The presentations aimed to inform young designers of the dynamic, purely export-oriented and extroverted sector of fur and allow them to become acquainted with the unique material of fur, the various possibilities and applications it allows, to enable them to participate more effectively in the contest, which aims to foster new talent in the field of fur product design in Greece.

The HAF’s representative, Ms Zourla, talked about the particularities of the Greek fur industry and the activities of the Hellenic Association of Furriers, focusing on the various events concerning designers organised during the International Fur Fair “FUR EXCELLENCE IN ATHENS”, and provided participants with details about the contest.

NAFA’s representative and Vice-president of Buyer Relations, Mr Poulios, placed particular emphasis on the significant role played by Greek furrier companies in the field internationally.  Introducing NAFA’s promotion activities and the special fashion events it organises in markets of interest internationally, he provided a clear overview of the fur industry’s relationship with fashion and the prospects offered to young designers by the sector.

Once again HAF’s associate, Mr Vasilis Kardasis, professor of the Royal College of Art, London and art director of NAFA Studio, Toronto, stole the limelight, presenting the material and potential of fur in his own special way.   Using samples of various fur stitching techniques, created at his guidance by the NAFA Studio, he encouraged attendees to a hands-on study of these materials and use their passion and imagination for creating their own designs.

Attendees, teachers and new designers studying in design schools in Greece, could not curb their enthusiasm, stating “It was amazing!  We’d like to thank you for the opportunity to learn so many things about fur, in such a direct manner”. Full of new experiences they start their designs for the contest in order to rank in the top three positions, which will ensure their participation in the one-week seminar in Toronto, all inclusive, a prize by the great sponsor of the exhibition, the NAFA Auction House.

The Young Greek Designers Contest, expiring on 8 December 2014, is held for the 4th consecutive year in the framework of the International Fur Fair “FUR EXCELLENCE IN ATHENS”, which this year will be held on 24 to 27 March 2015.

Announcement of Competition for Greek Young Designers in the framework of the 5th International Fur Fair “FUR EXCELLENCE IN ATHENS”

For the fourth consecutive year, the “Hellenic Association of Furriers (HAF)” in cooperation with the Fur Action House of NAFA announces the “ Greek Young Designers Competition” for the awarding of new talents in the fur products design.  It is open to young people attending Greek universities and design, pattern and fashion schools.

Those interested can send their proposed designs/creations by 8 December 2014 to the Hellenic Association of Furriers by email at helasfur@otenet.gr.

This year, proposed designs will draw their inspiration from Greek mythology or anything related to Ancient Greece, as detailed in the attached summary of the topic by our associate,  professor of the Royal College of Art, London and art director of NAFA Studio, Mr Kardasis Vasilis, and fur must be used as their basic material.  For the familiarisation of participants with the types of fur, two presentations “The Excellence of Fur” will be held in Thessaloniki and Athens, on 23 and 24 October respectively.

An experts’ committee will select the ten (10) best among them, which will then be made free by companies participating in the exhibition as exhibitors, for the award of the three first winners of the Competition. To allow the fabrication of the 10 originally selected designs, participants must directly submit the corresponding pattern, if selected.

The prize for the first three is a one-week seminar – workshop in Toronto, Canada, at the Studio Design one of the most famous Fur Auction Houses in the world, the NAFA (North American Fur Auction) (http://www.nafa.ca/). Transport and accommodation expenses will be covered by the International Auction House NAFA.

The contest is held in the framework of the 5th International Fur Fair “FUR EXCELLENCE IN ATHENS”, which is held from 24 to 27 March 2015, a fair aiming at the promotion of the Greek fur industry internationally, as FUR EXCELLENCE IN ATHENS – International Fur Fair is an event of strategic importance for the industry and fashion of Fur, a meeting point of buyers and producers from around the world.  The three winners of the competition will be awarded during the fair.

Below is a summary of the topics for the Greek Young Designers Competition, held in the framework of the 5th International Fur Fair “FUR EXCELLENCE IN ATHENS” by Mr Vasilis Kardasis, associate of the HAF and professor of the Royal College of Art-London.

1st TOPIC

Choose a Hero or Heroine from your favourite Greek Myth.

They may be villains …, or “sheep”… Hopeless romantics….

* how would you describe their power, character and overall personality in a fur garment?

2nd TOPIC

Choose one of the classic art masterpieces of our Greek heritage, a building or part of a building, a cup, an amphora, a disc, a sculpture, a piece of jewellery, a weapon or mosaic … that is simply breathtaking to you.

Study it carefully, and translate your feelings and emotions in a fur garment of your design.

What are the elements and characteristics of your chosen inspiration that would move even a man on the moon so much as to make him want to steal your creation?

All your love, passion and devotion in what you do and what you say should be able to make a blind man see and a sick man to be cured!

Do your best.

Vasilis Kardasis

Successful and Magical the ‘Discovering Fur Excellence’ Workshop at FEA 2014

In an atmosphere filled with excitement, joy and emotions concluded the three day Discovering Fur Excellence’ Workshop that was held during FEA 2014 under the guidance of Mr Vasili Kardasis, professor at Royal College of Art- London and advisory member to the board of HAF.  All of the 15 Greek Young Designers, who participated, thanked Hellenic Association of Furriers for giving them the chance to experiment with fur, a material totally unknown to them.

During this workshop, thanks to the unconditional help provided by prof. Vasili Kardasi as well as the fur technician experts, the participants were able to work and love a soft, luxurious and multi versatile material that they had so far ignored, either because of the false, as they admitted, ethical perspectives regarding animal rights they had or simply because they considered it a material suited for older ages.   These perspectives changed thanks to the information given during the workshop and having worked with fur.  They all declared completely satisfied for the chance they were given to meet and work with this fascinating material and with people from the fur industry.

The emotions and magic that prof. Kardasis inspired to all participating young designers were evident during the small closing ceremony which took place on the 29th of March.  Along with the certifications of attendance that were handed out to the participants by HAF’s representative Mrs Aphrodite Zourla, each one of them presented his project, explaining his own inspiration.

They renew their gathering for next year’s workshop during FEA 2015, thanked prof. Kardasis, the fur technicians and HAF’s representative for the unique opportunity that was provided to them, and expressed their wish for another similar workshop organized the soonest possible!

And, because a picture is better than a thousand of words:

Several workshops are held during FEA for Furriers and Designers.  Participants are being informed about the latest fur techniques.  Most importantly they learn to listen to their hearts, think freely and create their creations accordingly.
‘Love of the Apple’ was the theme of last year workshop that was organized during Fur Excellence in Athens 2013 by professor of Royal College of Art, creative director of NAFA studio, Vasili Kardasi.  “The purpose of the workshop was to awaken, stimulate, inspire, and to allow our creative minds to discover the pleasure of connection.  In the simplest way!  However, simplicity is almost impossible to achieve.
